Gold and pearl earring

Roman gold and pearl earring, 1st century CE, known as crotalia (“castanets”) for the soft jingling sound of its pearl pendants. Crafted in gold with suspended pearls, height 2.9 cm (1 1/8 in.). Popular among Roman women, with many examples discovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum.
